Women's
A woman’s tallit is a rectangular prayer shawl with tassels attached at its four corners. A woman’s tallit is often made of cotton, silk, and other fabrics, and decorated with various designs and colors. The Atara (tiara) is the upper part of the tallit that surrounds the neck. It is a special piece of cloth sewn and richly embroidered with the blessing: "Blessed art Thou, O Lord, our God, King of the universe, Who hast sanctified us by Thy commandments, and hast commanded us to wrap ourselves in the fringed garment." The tallis is draped over the wearer’s shoulders during morning prayers as well as during readings from the Torah scroll in the synagogue. Girls wear a tallis for the first time during their Bat Mitzva ceremony. A beautiful privilege is for the mother to buy a Talit for her daughter as part of the custom of bringing her into the world of Judaism.
