Men's
A man’s tallit is a rectangular prayer shawl with tassels attached at its four corners. A man’s tallit is usually made either of wool or of linen, and is decorated with black or blue stripes. The Atara (tiara) is the upper part of the tallit that surrounds the neck. It is a special piece of cloth sewn and richly embroidered with the blessing: "Blessed art Thou, O Lord, our God, King of the universe, Who hast sanctified us by Thy commandments, and hast commanded us to wrap ourselves in the fringed garment." The tallis is draped over the wearer’s shoulders during morning prayers as well as during readings from the Torah scroll in the synagogue. Boys wear a tallis for the first time during their Bar Mitzva ceremony. A beautiful privilege is for the father or grandfather to purchase a tallit for his son or grandson as part of the custom of bringing him into the world of Judaism. In some communities, it is customary for a bridegroom to dress in a talit during the Huppah ceremony (the wedding), and the father is wrapped with a talit during the Brit Mila ceremony (circumcision) of his son.
