Challah Covers
A challah cover is a special decorative cloth used to cover the two challot at the Sabbath meal. A Challah is the traditional Jewish bread eaten on Shabbat and Jewish holidays. Why cover the challahs? Jewish meals typically begin with a blessing over bread, but at the Shabbat meal, we make a Kiddush and bless the wine first. Therefore, in order not to “embarrass” the challah breads that are usually blessed first, we cover them until it is their turn to be blessed. This is to remind us to be conscious of human feelings and not to hurt them. Challah covers are typically decorated and embroidered with biblical motifs and inscriptions "for Shabbat and Yom Tov", and they are a beautiful Bat Mitzva and wedding gift, as well as a meaningful present for a new house.
