Shabbat
Shabbat is the seventh day of the Jewish week and a day of rest and spirituality. The Jewish day starts with the appearance of stars in the night sky, therefore Shabbat begins on Friday evening and ends on Saturday night. Before Shabbat enters, it is traditional for the woman of the household to light two candles in special Shabbat candleholders and she brings in the Shabbat with a blessing. There are families that light another candle for every child. Dinner begins with Kiddush (blessing) over the wine and the blessing over the Challah bread. The Kiddush cup is used again on Shabbat meal, the following day, when blessings are recited over the wine and the Challot. When Shabbat is over, Havdalah is recited. The Havdalah ceremony separates the sacred Sabbath day from the rest of the week.
