Tefillin
Tefillin are two small, black leather boxes with black leather straps attached to them. The text written inside is Parashat Shema, the biblical verses in which Tefillin are commanded. Each pair of Tefillin is hand-crafted and hand-written by a scribe. When a boy reaches the age of 13, he becomes a Bar Mitzva according to Jewish tradition. From that point on, he is deemed responsible for his actions and his Mitzvot (good deeds). The first mitzvah he is commanded as an adult is to put on tefilin. During the weekday morning prayers, he is required to place one box on his forehead and tie the other one on his arm. A beautiful custom and privilege is for the grandfather to buy a set of tefilin and a Tallit for his grandson as a Bar Mitzvah present. It symbolizes the connection between the generations. In recent years, some women have also begun “laying” tefillin when they reach the age of Bat Mitzvah.
