Mezuzot
A mezuzah is the parchment within the mezuza case, which is handwritten by an expert scribe. The parchment contains excerpts of text from two Parashot: “Shema” and “Vehaya Im Shamoa”, which recall the unity of God, and the reward following the observance of God laws. The mezuzah parchment is rolled and placed inside the mezuzah case, which is attached to the right jamb at the entrance of a Jewish house. Religious Jews put a mezuzah at the entrance to every room in the house. It symbolizes God’s protection of the people who live in the house, and is a reminder of His presence at the entrance to and exit from the house. The word שדי (Shaddai) which appears on the back of the scroll is one of the names of God, as well as an acronym for “שומר דלתות ישראל” (Guardian of the doorways of Israel). A mezuza is a special gift for a new house, a wedding, and a great way to renew an atmosphere at home.
