Rosh Hashanah
Rosh Hashanah is the the Jewish New Year. It falls during the month of Tishrei (September) and it is one of the High Holy Days. According to Jewish tradition, God decides during these days who will live and who will die in the coming year. For that reason, Rosh Hashana is a time of self-reflection. We think about the wrong things we did last year and direct our hearts to do better next year. As part of making "TESHUVA," (repentance), it is customary to ask for forgiveness from people we hurt and receive their forgiveness in turn. We also ask for forgiveness from God for our sins and direct ourselves to purify our souls in order to be better people in the coming year. The Shofar is blown in the synagogue in order to incite the people to repent. The sound is meant to shake the people’s souls and open the gates of heaven. To symbolize the hope of a sweet new year - it is customary to dip apples in honey in special honey dishes.
