Passover
Passover (Pesach in Hebrew) is the "holiday of freedom." It commemorates the Jewish Exodus from Egypt, the liberation from slavery, and the process of becoming the Jewish nation, walking toward the promised land of Israel. The name derives from the fact that during the last plague, the slaying of the Egyptian firstborn, God "passed over" the Jewish homes and kept them safe from harm. Passover begins on the fifteenth night of the Hebrew month of Nissan (end of March- early April) and lasts for seven days in Israel, and eight days all over the world. In Israel, the Seder is held on the first night of the holiday, whereas throughout the rest of the world it is held on the first two nights. The Seder is a meaningful ceremony wherein we retell the story of our departure from Egypt and praise God for giving us freedom in signs and wonders.
