Dreidles

A Dreidle is a children's spinning toy with a Hebrew letter on each one of its four sides. Children play with it during Hanukkah by spinning it and gambling upon which Hebrew letter the dreidel will fall when it stops spinning. In all parts of the world except Israel, the four letters on the dreidle are Nun (נ), Gimmel (ג), Hay (ה), Shin (ש), which stand for "Nes Gadol Hayah Sham", meaning "A great miracle happened there (in the land of Israel)." In Israel, the letters on the dreidle are Nun (נ), Gimmel (ג), Hay (ה), Pey (פ), which stand for "Nes Gadol Hayah Po", meaning "A great miracle happened here." The miracle refers to the miracle of the oil. These days the dreidel has also become a collectible item. It is a great gift for kids for Hanukah, as well as an art item for adults building a private collection.
