Bat Mitzvah
According to the Jewish tradition, a girl who reaches the age of 12 or 13 becomes an adult and she is obligated to observe the Torah prohibitions and to fulfill its commandments. The transition to this new stage in life, when the girl becomes an adult, is celebrated by the family and community. It has become a custom for Bat Mitzva girls to wear a tallit on their Bat Mitzva ceremony in the synagogue. In some denominations of Judaism, women wear a talit during prayers, when called to the Torah, or while participating in the ceremony of taking out and replacing the Torah scroll to the ark. A beautiful custom and a privilege is for the mother to purchase a Tallit for her daughter. It is a symbol of the commencement of the daughter’s Jewish womanhood. There is a custom to give a gift with a Jewish meaning to the bat mitzvah girl, such as candlesticks, jewelry with Jewish symbols, and more.
